The party secretary of Yunnan province in southwest China urged officials during a meeting not to report on other officials yesterday amid China’s anti-corruption drive.

“Officials should be kind to each other and should not report (on other officials) because of a little self-interest,” Yunnan’s party secretary, Qin Guangrong, was quoted as saying by China News, a state-run agency.

“Of the 100 complaint letters in Yunan, maybe six of them are real,” Qin said.

Writing anonymous complaint letters is a common tactic people use to report on corrupt officials. But analysts fear that some officials could try to take advantage of the corruption crackdown as an opportunity to get rid of political opponents by submitting falsified complaints.

The Communist Party’s corruption watchdog said after their inspection in Yunnan that officials “had many problems” there. More than 60 officials in the province have been investigated for corruption allegations this year.

Yunnan’s former vice-governor, Shen Peiping, was investigated for discipline violations in April. Reports said he falsified his academic records.
