At a meeting on Wednesday, senior officials at security apparatus and law enforcement institutions said the probe into Zhou, who once oversaw those departments, is a demonstration of the top leadership’s determination for rigorous self-discipline.

Security chief Meng Jianzhu said the probe into Zhou shows that no one would be exempted in the anti-graft drive and urged law-and-order officials to realise the “extreme severity” and “huge damage” of Zhou’s conduct.

Meng said officials should learn from Zhou’s downfall and reflect on the root cause of his discipline violations.

Both the army and the state-owned oil giant China National Petroleum Corporation have declared support for Zhou’s probe. Zhou had extensive experience in oil sector.

In its editorial the People’s Daily said, in an apparent reference to the massive business empire run by Zhou’s family members and close allies: “The practice of granting privileges to one’s relatives and subordinates is absolutely banned within the Party. Those who did this are doomed to fall.”
