Why get an associate degree in Hong Kong and what are the benefits of one? For many students in Hong Kong and elsewhere, this question might come up when they are considering their post-secondary education options in Hong Kong. For those that choose to pursue an associate degree in Hong Kong, the benefits of one in the career field they want to be in are too good to pass up. Associate degrees are a recognized way for many graduates to prove to future employers that they have the knowledge and know-how to succeed in their chosen field of work.

An associate degree in Hong Kong is much like an associate degree obtained anywhere else in the world, but the associate degree in Hong Kong is considerably newer than its global counterparts. Associate degrees were created in the United States and Hong Kong adopted them relatively recently in 2000. The Hong Kong government had the goal of increasing the number of people in the workforce with post-secondary education when they created the associate degree program. Many schools in Hong Kong quickly adopted the associate degree at the government’s urging. An associate degree is great for those who don’t necessarily want a bachelor’s degree or for students who didn’t test well while taking the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE). Either way, a graduate can find rewarding work with an associate degree or use it as a stepping stone to continue their education should they ever decide to go after a bachelor’s degree and beyond.

There are also great advantage for getting an associate degree in Hong Kong. Associate degrees can be taken in two to three years, which means they offer greater flexibility to students than those in traditional four-year program. In these two-to-three years, an associate degree program will teach general post-secondary education while also focusing on an area of a student’s choosing. Associate degrees can focus on accounting, business management, financial services, marketing, design, life science healthcare, journalism, psychology, creative animation, and many, many more. All the while a student is focusing on their intended area of employment, they will also be learning logical thinking, problem solving, communication skills, and other necessities for success in the business world.

As for those students who intend to use their associate degree to get a bachelor degree, an associate degree is a great way to get a foot in the door with a traditional university. The main goal of an associate degree is to prepare a student for university, which is opposite from a Higher Diploma, a UK-invention that helps graduates find immediate work. Upon completion of an associates degree program, a graduate can skip the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) and apply directly to university. The associate degree will show the university that a student now has what it takes to partake in the rigors of an undergraduate university program.

An associate degree in Hong Kong is a great way for students who aren’t quite sure or ready for a four year program to learn about an area they are interested in. It’s also the best way for a student who didn’t test well on the HKDSE to prove to university admissions that they have what it takes to enter a four-year program. As for those that have no desire to use the associate degree to get into a four-year university, an associate degree is beneficial to finding work. An associate degree in Hong Kong shows employers that a person has the basic skill set and rudimentary business savvy to succeed in a workplace environment.
