Background on the Hong Kong Management Association

Sam Prince
For a student looking for a management course in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Management Association (HKMA) is the best place to begin their search. The HKMA is the most recognized and oldest management school in Hong Kong, and continues to advance management excellence within Hong Kong and mainland China to this day. The goal of the HKMA is simple: it wants to provide the region with the necessary training, skills, and experience to succeed in modern management. But what’s the story behind this association, and how are they fulfilling their mission statement to students in 2014 and beyond?

The HKMA was created in early 1960 by a delegation of six people from Hong Kong, but was spearheaded by the Honourable Sir Sik-nin Chau. Sir Chau was a prominent Hong Kong doctor, politician, and businessman, and even served on the Legislative Council of Hong Kong until 1959. In 1960, Sir Chau, acting as founding chairman, traveled to Australia with his five compatriots to attend the Twelfth International Congress of Scientific Management. Upon returning from the Congress, Sir Chau and the delegation realized that in order for Hong Kong to sustain its burgeoning status as an international city, Hong Kong needed to have an association to keep up-to-date with management theory. By approval of the Hong Kong Government, the Hong Kong Management Association was created on November 22, 1960.

In their effort to overhaul the standard management course in Hong Kong, the HKMA announced their mission outright in 1960: to promote the best practices in management by nurturing human capital at all levels of education while providing members a network to exchange ideas. By this, they have instilled their values into the growth of management in Hong Kong to this day with their emphasis of continuous improvement. Understandably, the HKMA has always been advocate of innovation and change. They seek new ideas constantly and yet, these values are gilded by a level of morality within the association, as the HKMA has made it clear that it expects integrity from its members by forthright dealings, respect for individuals, and professional. The HKMA has also been on the forefront of the sustainability movement in all their operations and business practices.
For anyone looking to take a management course in Hong Kong, the HKMA offers the best in the region. In fact, the HKMA offers over 2,000 training programs a year to nearly 40,000 participants. These courses can be taken in degree or diploma programs, certificate courses, evening and weekend short courses, associate degree programs, and even in secondary education. The diversity of the association and the structure it offers to students of all levels is one of the main reasons the HKMA has retained its status since its inception. That, and the fact that outside of its education programs, it keeps an active networking program for its members. The HKMA offers conferences, seminars, forums, evening talks, luncheons, and dinners to allow for the valuable exchange of networking and exchanging ideas.
The Hong Kong Management Association really is the best education providers Hong Kong has to offer. Whatever age or education level, the HKMA offers the most exceptional management courses in Hong Kong, and by their own standards, continues to grow and operate as not only a school, but a networking forum to continue its position as a relevant and significant force in the evolution of management theory within the Sinosphere and beyond.
