A party source said yesterday a new item on 'the place of politics and party committees' in national institutions had been added to the agenda of the upcoming sixth plenum of the party's Central Committee.

Xinhua (the New China News Agency) pointed out yesterday that party authorities had revived the system of the resident party committee being the highest authority of an institute of higher education.

Since President Jiang Zemin introduced the edict 'talk more about politics' last winter, the official media has been replete with exhortations to party members and citizens to take in more Marxism-Leninism and Mao Zedong Thought.

The party source said Mr Jiang's ideal would be given 'concrete manifestation' at the plenum.

'Mr Jiang's idea is that while China goes about its economic construction, politics must be given pride of place to ensure the country is going in the right direction,' he said.

'The party committee of each school and factory is there to point out the right direction. It must be given more power and prestige.' The Xinhua dispatch confirmed reports party authorities had replaced the 'college president responsibility system' of the late 1980s with the 'college president responsibility system under the leadership of the party committee'.
