The dissent witnessed at the weekend's Preparatory Committee consultations will not be a feature of the Selection Committee, it has been decided.
The consensus among Preparatory Committee members following the weekend talks is that no one will be able to sit on the body to appoint Hong Kong's post-handover leaders unless they clearly support the provisional legislature.
Opposition to the handover legislature provoked widespread dissent inside the consultations, and demonstrations by protesters outside.
Convenor of the Preparatory Committee sub-group overseeing the establishment of the selection body, Tam Yiu-chung, said members agreed candidates must comply with all decisions of the National People's Congress and the Preparatory Committee, including the setting up of the provisional legislature.
Most members also demanded candidates should love the motherland, support the 'one country, two systems' concept and adhere to the Basic Law, he added.
Most also believed Selection Committee members should be elected from a pool of candidates nominated by groups representing most sectors of Hong Kong life, although some said the membership should be decided after 'democratic consultation', said Mr Tam.
The sub-group meets again next month to finalise its proposal and submit it to the plenary session of the Preparatory Committee.
