Independent legislator Emily Lau Wai-hing will make a plea on Friday for the early release of Ming Pao journalist Xi Yang at the Legislative Council's House Committee. Ms Lau and other protesters yesterday went to Xinhua (the New China News Agency) headquarters to mark the second anniversary of Xi's abortive appeal against conviction and sentence in China. Xi was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for 'stealing state secrets'. 'I think many Hong Kong people are rejoicing at the release of Au Wing-cheung and Wong Chuen-ming . . . So while we were welcoming the two back from Manila, we hope Mr Xi in Beijing will know we've not forgotten him,' Ms Lau said. She appealed to journalists, politicians and businessmen to work together for this common goal. 'Sadly, I don't see enough people within the journalistic profession who are doing much to seek Xi's release,' she said.
