Heroics on show as Scorpions hit the top

ALL-ROUNDER David Clifton-James led Scorpions to a four-wicket victory over Vagabonds, lifting them to the top of the Sunday League standings at Mission Road yesterday.

Clifton-James snapped up six wickets and scored 79 as Scorpions took over at the top from Templars.

Vagabonds had set Scorpions a difficult target, scoring 284 for nine in 50 overs.

Vagabonds were indebted to a 191-run sixth-wicket stand from century-maker Anthony Williams and Ravi Sujanani. Williams made 117 and Sujanani scored 84 and the pair rescued the Vagabonds' innings, which was tottering at 79 for five.

Clifton-James took six for 29 in eight overs.

He then joined Bob Stiller and Matthew Johnson in helping Scorpions to their target. Stiller hit 92, but Johnson's heroics ensured victory for Scorpions.

Needing 22 runs from the last two overs, Johnson hit 23 in eight balls, including three sixes and one boundary to take his side through.

Optimists maintained their challenge with an 88-run victory over Indian Recreation Club at the Hongkong Cricket Club.

John Hawkesley scored 103 as Optimists piled up 285 for seven in 45 overs.

IRC were bowled out for 197 in 38 overs, Trupty Nimkar hitting 73. Stefan Green and Robin Hughes each took three wickets.

In other matches, Infidels earned the maximum 20 points with a seven-wicket win over Little Sai Wan at Diocesan Boys' School, and Wanderers gained a winning draw at So Kon Po against British Forces for 11 points.
