Police are seeking legal advice on whether to press charges against Vietnamese inmates at the High Island detention centre who held a Correctional Services Department officer hostage and threatened to kill him.
A police investigation has been completed and referred to the Attorney-General's office which is expected to announce in a few days whether charges will be pressed.
Correctional Services officer Wong Fu-shing was delivering food to the north section of the camp on March 6, when a gang armed with spears and knives held him hostage for more than 11 hours.
The inmates demanded the cancellation of an exercise to extract a group of boat people who were to be forcibly repatriated, and threatened to kill Mr Wong.
The Governor formally commended the 34-year-old officer yesterday for his courage and professionalism in the face of a life-threatening situation.
His colleague Sun Yuk-lun, who was hurt when the Vietnamese stormed the gate and tried to gain entry to the South Section of the detention centre during the same incident, was also commended.
