A Hong Kong businessman was sentenced to a year in jail by a mainland court yesterday for having a mistress in China. Wong Yin-cheung, 32, was found guilty of bigamy by the Zhongshan Municipal Intermediate People's Court. His Sichuan mistress, Li Zhongmei, was detained for re-education for three months. Judge Yan Yilin said he hoped the sentencing would help deter Hong Kong and Macau people from taking mistresses on the mainland. It was the first time a Chinese court had dealt with a bigamy case involving Hong Kong people. The court heard Wong had an affair with Li, a hotel worker, in Zhongshan after he was sent to work in the Guangdong city by his Hong Kong chinaware company in 1992. The pair were married in Chengdu, Sichuan, in 1993. Wong's wife discovered the affair last year and forced the pair to divorce in Zhongshan. Yet Wong and Li continued to live together, the court was told. Police arrested the pair after Wong's wife complained in February. In sentencing, Judge Yan said Wong was found guilty of bigamy because of the de facto husband-wife relationship between Wong and Li. Mrs Wong allowed her daughter to meet Wong before he was escorted away by court guards yesterday.
