Bathers have been warned to be on their guard after a three-metre tiger shark was netted four kilometres off Tuen Mun yesterday.
The 300-kilogram shark was netted by a fisherman at about 4 am yesterday off Brothers islands.
The Tuen Mun-based fisherman, who only gave his name as Cheung, said the shark, a pregnant female, was very strong. It took him and three helpers about an hour to winch it on to the deck of his 30-metre-long offshore fishing boat. He was asking $23,000 for further details and a picture of the shark.
A shark scare erupted in Hong Kong last summer after at least three swimmers were killed in attacks off small beaches along the Clear Water Bay coastline.
Agriculture and Fisheries Department officer Joseph Sham Chun-hung said: 'It is not unusual that fishermen can catch sharks near Hong Kong waters although a shark of three metres is rather long.'
