A call for better government support for chronically ill patients was endorsed last night. Independent legislator Lee Cheuk-yan's suggestion all itemised medical charges be abolished was backed by 28 votes to nine. Mr Lee said the means test which decided whether applicants could be helped with medical charges was stringent. And the fund which offered subsidies to needy patients was too small at only $2 million a year. His motion was an amendment to one put by Mok Ying-fan. Mr Mok said support could include increasing employment chances, rehabilitation services and resources for developing self-help groups for the patients.
