Hong Kong and Indonesia have long enjoyed healthy trade and economic ties, and their relationship was strengthened earlier this year with the signing of an agreement to increase co-operation.

In April, Nus Nuzulia Ishak, director general of Indonesia's National Export Development, and Benjamin Chau, deputy director of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), signed a joint statement in conjunction with the Hong Kong International Gifts and Premium Fair.

"The signing of this joint statement is an effort to optimise the programme and joint co-operation between Indonesia and Hong Kong that is written in the [memorandum of understanding] on trade promotion signed on 20 February, 2012," Nus said.

The agreement will see the HKTDC promote 500 Indonesian companies on its website, targeting art, decorations and craft; houseware; furniture; gifts, premium toys and games; gemstones and jewellery; garments and textiles; fashion and accessories; food; and tea and stationery.

Chau said the Hong Kong business community was able to increase trade relations with Indonesian entrepreneurs, who could use the HKTDC's website as a marketplace to attract local partners.

Nus added: "It is hoped that Indonesian export products can be developed in accordance with international market preferences and the current product trends, which in the end would continue to increase Indonesia's trade volume."
