MURDERS increased by almost 70 per cent across the territory last year.

According to the 1995 Coroners' Report, there were 117 murders, an increase of 47 on the previous year.
There were 26 deaths from stabbings, down slightly on the 29 of 1994, while the number of fatal shootings also fell, from 11 in 1994 to seven last year.
But the number of fatal arson attacks increased, with fire-related killings rising in the past year to 12. There were no such deaths in 1994.
Five children were beaten to death, compared with three in 1994.

Hong Kong University criminologist Dr Roderic Broadhurst said it was too early to be sure whether this was the start of a trend.
