Ostrich farming takes off in Asia
At one time ostriches were farmed for their feathers, which found their way into the entertainment business adorning the figures of dancing girls in the days of the Folies Bergere.
Today, among other things, ostriches are farmed for their leather.
Ostrich leather is considered the finest and most expensive in the world.
The soft leather is durable with a distinctive fine grain, characterised by the quill markings. It is highly prized by craftsmen who utilise its qualities for belts, wallets, handbags and shoes.
At current prices, tanned and cured ostrich leather is worth three times as much as crocodile skin.
Despite high prices, demand for ostrich leather has been growing in the last few years. Now that supplies are increasing, it is believed that the leather will become more affordable.
