An inmate at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre was found dead yesterday, possibly the victim of a gang fight. Wong Hing-kwok, 36, was found unconscious on his bed at about 7 am by an officer on patrol duty. Initial investigations revealed extensive bruising to his chest and wounds to the neck, head and back. Wong was taken to Princess Margaret Hospital although the reception centre doctor on call had already pronounced him dead. Lai Chi Kok serves as a remand centre for prisoners who are under trial or awaiting trial. Wong had been remanded in the centre since April 19 after being charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and resisting arrest, a Correctional Services Department spokesman said. The dead man was due to appear at the Kwun Tong Court on May 30 for sentencing. Investigations are being carried out by the Kowloon West Regional Crime Unit headed by Chief Inspector Tsang Cheung-tat. Mr Tsang would not rule out the possibility of a gang fight. Other detainees showed signs of injury.
