Holland's presence on the world sporting stage is as rich in diversity as it is in success.
From equestrian sport to football, athletics to hockey, the participation of Dutch sportsmen and women has added rich fabric to the international sporting tapestry.
In an Olympic year, thoughts are turning to the heroes who have returned a golden haul for the small country.
Holland ranks 19th overall in medals won at all games in the modern Olympics. Since 1896, Dutch competitors have claimed 45 gold medals, 52 silver and 71 bronze in a mix of talent which features Fanny Blankers-Koen, Lieutenant Charles Pahud de Montanges, Yvonne van Gennip and Adrianus 'Ard' Schenk.
Blankers-Koen is an Olympic legend. She missed her chance when the 1940 and 1944 Olympics were cancelled because of World War II. She returned to competition at the 1948 London games as the holder of six world records and the mother of two small children.
She won gold in the 100 metres, 200m, 80m hurdles and as a member of the 100m relay team. She did not compete at Olympic level again.
