Three months after a massive earthquake hit Yunnan's Lijiang region claiming more than 240 lives, aftershocks are still making lives difficult for the villagers, relief workers said.

Hong Kong Red Cross international services and relief officer Enkas Chan Ping-hay, who visited the Lijiang region in early February and is returning there tomorrow, said that lingering aftershocks had made reconstruction work more difficult.

'An aftershock measuring over four on the Richter Scale struck the region just about two weeks ago,' Mr Chan explained.

The organisation had raised about $58 million for the victims of the Yunnan earthquake, of which about $30 million had already been committed to the first phase of its operation.

The money has been spent on immediate relief for a total of 50,777 victims in five severely affected counties - Jianshan, Huangshan, Lashi, Mingyin and Baisha.

'The rest will be used for rehabilitation and reconstruction of the region,' he said.

During his forthcoming trip, Mr Chan will discuss with the local Red Cross officials how to launch the second phase of the relief work.
