At the 1988 Seoul Olympics, diver Wong Kin-chung's 'perfect zero' belly-flop from the three-metre springboard provided Hong Kong with probably its most embarrassing moment in sport at international level.

Eight years later, and the territory may finally be able to defeat the demons of the past, thanks to promising youngster Ng Sui.

The 15-year-old, China-born Ng showed at the recent Asian Championships in Bangkok that Hong Kong have recovered from the Seoul debacle when Wong, on his 11th and final dive, completely fluffed his effort to earn resounding zeroes from poolside judges.

Ng finished an excellent seventh at Bangkok and is expected to be named in the Hong Kong team for this year's Olympic Games in Atlanta.

Chu Hark-keung, honorary secretary of the Hong Kong Amateur Swimming Association's diving committee, said Ng has a bright future ahead of him if he continues to progress at his current rate.

'He finished seventh out of 13 in Bangkok during the finals,' said Chu. 'He did very well and also finished ahead of a couple of Chinese divers.
