Lavender Patten says the relationship between a mother and child is a special one and Mother's Day is a time to reflect on the experiences they have shared.
With three daughters of her own, Mrs Patten, wife of Governor Chris Patten, said the day should be a time to enjoy each other's company. Every day should be special for mothers, she said.
'I am sure that a child's love for his or her mother exists every day and so one could argue that every day is Mother's Day,' Mrs Patten said.
'However, I am very fortunate to receive a Mother's Day card each year from my daughters and, if they are unable to be with me, we speak on the phone.' Mrs Patten said her family normally celebrated the English Mother's Day which this year fell on March 17. She did not know if she would be lucky enough to receive a second card next Sunday, Hong Kong's Mother's Day.
She said the simple gifts from her daughters Kate, 23, Laura, 21, and Alice, 16, were always the most memorable.
'I think a home-made Mother's Day card always holds special memories because your child has often put a great deal of effort into making the card for you. It is not the value of the gift that is given.' Mrs Patten said her childhood recollections of Mother's Day were of a happy time.
