Many personal possessions of Admiral Lord Fraser, Vice-Admiral J. H. Edelsten and their staffs were also lost in the flames.
The fire, which began about 1pm, completely burned out the upper rooms after the roof caved in and most of the downstairs rooms were either gutted by flames or damaged by water, although some of the solid oak floors stood up well to the crashing plaster and beams.
The fire could be easily seen from the city and roofs of big buildings were crowded throughout the afternoon with spectators watching black smoke and shooting flames.
The fire was discovered by a Navy driver who had gone to Admiralty House to drive Vice-Admiral Edelsten to a luncheon party. On arrival he was confronted by a group of excited Chinese servants who informed him of the outbreak.
He immediately snatched a fire extinguisher from the car and dashed to the first floor, where he found the fire had broken out in a passage-way near the Japanese room. He played the flames with the extinguisher, but found they were getting out of control, so with the help of two European stewards he began removing furniture, rugs and carpets from the room.
