Key body set-up date 'delayed'

The set-up date for the 400-strong Selection Committee is likely to be delayed, sub-group members said last night.

Wilfred Wong Ying-wai said more time was needed to receive submissions.

He said it would be fair only if people outside the Preparatory Committee had their opinions heard.

This means the Preparatory Committee's Third Plenary Session, to be held in Zhuhai next week, would not come to a decision on its formation as expected.

Mr Wong said the sub-group, which starts its two-day meeting today, would suggest several options on the method of formation to the plenum.

He said the formation of the Selection Committee was an important subject that should not be finalised by 40-odd sub-group members.

The Preparatory Committee endorsed in its second plenum in March that the Selection Committee should have two functions - to select the future chief executive and to help establish the provisional legislature.

Committee member Frederick Fung Kin-kee said the delay would be acceptable if the chief executive was selected in October.

A summary of opinions from the territory-wide consultation is to be tabled for discussion today.
