Students studying for the HKCEE can now tune in to two new radio programmes to hone their oral and listening skills as native English speakers express their likes and dislikes on the airwaves.
Dino Mahoney, an associate professor in the Department of English at City University of Hong Kong, has doubled his radio output - he already produces Short and Sweet and Reading Ear on Radio 4 (97.6 to 98.9 FM MHz) - with two new programmes.
Western students recall their interesting experiences and talk about their favourite subjects like music and food in Hear it Right.
And students who are native English speakers teach phonetics in Say it Right .
'Hong Kong students are very concerned about their pronunciation and their ability to hear native speakers,' Professor Mahoney said.
'The two programmes are like self-access learning tools in which students can listen to the programmes on their own without teachers looking over their shoulders.' The programmes, launched early this month, also give students a chance to hear conversational English which has not been scripted.
