A LEGAL loophole which only entitles the families of male auxiliary service staff to a pension may soon be plugged.
No provisions have so far been made for the dependents of a woman killed or injured while on duty with the police, ambulance or fire services.
The Auxiliary Forces Pensions (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill to be tabled in the Legislative Council later this year will provide a new unified scheme for injury pensions, death gratuities and dependent pensions for all members of the auxiliary forces.
The package of pensions now payable to members of the Royal Hong Kong Auxiliary Police Force is different to that for other auxiliary services.
The option to make a claim under the Employees' Compensation Ordinance is not available to auxiliary police.
Principal Assistant Secretary for Security Andrew Kluth said the Government would ensure the new law was in line with the Bill of Rights Ordinance and the Equal Opportunities Bill.
