Parents in Wan Chai trying to decide on the right secondary school for their Primary Six children can get expert advice from a video.

  The video is a detailed introduction to the 23 secondary schools in the Wan Chai district.

  It was sponsored by the Wan Chai District Board and co-produced by the Wan Chai Home Affairs Office and the Wan Chai District Headmasters' Association.

  The 52-minute video gives an overview of the schools, with details about classes, curriculum and staff. One-hundred copies have been produced for distribution to 33 primary schools and public libraries.

  'Without proper guidance, parents have to depend on what they know and hear about secondary schools when they have to choose one,' said Mak Yue-pick, vice-chairman of the headmasters' association.

  'The video is a useful update, giving parents the latest on the schools, including their development, subjects and facilities. This is of great help to them.'   Ms Mak, principal of St James' Primary School, said it was the first time the association had produced a visual aid for the purpose of allocating school places.

  Video production started in late April, and secondary schools helped by providing slides.

  Harris Chan Hon-kwan of the Wan Chai Home Affairs office said that primary school principals would play the tape to parents, explaining and advising on certain points if necessary.

  'Unfortunately, some parents have had to hand in their children's place allocation forms before May 13, and they have not been able to benefit from the video. But we hope the tape will be used in years to come to help parents.'   In a seminar introducing the video, teacher representatives were invited to discuss the three kinds of secondary schools found in the district - government schools, aided schools and private schools.

  Some of Hong Kong's most highly regarded schools are found in the district, including Queen's College, Wah Yan College (Hong Kong) and Marymount Secondary School.
