Speaking as an employer, I am sick to death of the Annie Changs of this world who feel that we have an obligation to employ them, yet have no rights to set conditions of employment (South China Morning Post, May 20).

Fortunately, Hong Kong is still more formal than Europe and still manages to maintain a certain amount of dress code and employment ethics.

When you join a company it is your right to establish the terms and conditions of employment, however after you join you have an obligation to upkeep the company policy.

In the UK they are already submerged in an Annie Chang-type 21st century. Consequently, if a bank turns down a job applicant simply because he has orange hair, a ring through his nose and his vest needs urgent repairs, the bank can be prosecuted for discrimination.

I agree that our mothers don't tell us how to dress any more - but perhaps they should. But then again in the 21st century scenario presently being lived out in the UK, 60 per cent of mothers are single parents and are too busy looking after themselves to pay proper attention to what their children are doing.

The main difference between jungle rule and civilisation is that we have followed a code of ethics and a rule of law to get where we are today.
