I was hoping to have heard from Dora Lee, the chairperson of the organising committee of the Ivy League ball at the Grand Hyatt ballroom on Saturday, that she had returned the grand prize she claimed, but sadly no word yet.

Several annoyed attendees, however, have poured out many words on the subject.

Dora told her friends that since she bought large numbers of raffle tickets, she deserves to keep the prize.

Perhaps the young woman deserves some sort of prize for her audaciousness - a ballroom full of graduates from America's nine top universities was booing and hissing, yet she strolled back calmly to her table, clutching the prize of a New York holiday donated by Cathay Pacific and the Peninsula Group.

One attendee, Stephanie Mitchell, said: 'I won a Fuji Instant Camera, you know, the paper throw-away ones. I know my place in the pecking order.' Simon Clennell, chairman of Hong Kong Mensa, tells me he was at a Hong Kong dinner-dance where the winning ticket for the grand lucky draw prize was drawn by the marketing manager of the company that had sponsored the prize, and the event itself.

'She calmly accepted the prize and walked back to her seat clutching her company's own donated product,' he said.

I guess it's cheaper that way. Alison Bareham saw this in the job ads section of a Hong Kong newspaper (not this one) yesterday: 'Marketing Secretary. 10-12k. At least two years' experience. Physically fit with self-defence skill.' She said: 'I wonder what the interview will be like?'. The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, now gripped by pro-Beijing fever, is in good company. The leading triads of Lamma had a special celebratory dinner on the island on Tuesday to mark 400 days before the return to the motherland. They trooped up to the restaurant flaunting tattoos, Ray-Bans and mobile phones, and listened to rousing speeches.
