It's hard to believe Leonardo DiCaprio was 17 and appearing in his first feature film when he starred as a 13-year-old in This Boy's Life (Pearl, 9.30pm) in 1993.

That's not to say he wasn't experienced - he'd been acting since he was five - but, while there are enough Macaulay Culkins around to pack all the world's branches of Toys R Us, there are few child actors who can produce such mature and moving performances as this.

Based on the true story of writer Tobias Wolff's turbulent adolescent years, This Boy's Life is a bittersweet story about growing up in a violent home.

Thirteen-year-old Tobias (DiCaprio) has become used to moving around with his divorced but eternally optimistic mother, Caroline (Ellen Barkin).

Tobias begins to get into trouble at school and, in an effort to create stability and provide a role model for the boy, Caroline marries an older man, mechanic Dwight (Robert De Niro).

Dwight takes the idea of whipping the boy into shape literally and turns his life into a physical and mental hell.
