The Post Office, which yesterday revealed a new series of stamps without the Queen's head on them, said some antique postboxes may still remain on the streets after the handover.
Postmaster-General Robert Footman said about half the 800 boxes were antique, cast-iron models, some with King George V and Queen Victoria insignia.
'A lot of people are happy to have these antiques on the street,' Mr Footman said.
'We may approach the Joint Liaison Group to see whether we keep them just like we would a statue, or change them like the street names.' Hong Kong Tourist Association spokesman Peter Randall said antiquities, monuments and temples were becoming more popular with tourists.
Antiques expert Kamuel Chow Sheung-loong said the cast-iron postboxes appealed to local people and tourists because they were some of the few remaining features representing the history of the territory.
'I certainly like them and I think they should be kept but I don't know what the future Special Administrative Region government will think,' Mr Chow said.
