Mergers and acquisitions involving Chinese companies in developed economies are likely to increase. United States-headquartered law firm Paul Hastings has been helping Chinese companies to navigate regulatory regimes and solve the complex legal issues with these cross-border deals.

Paul Hastings gained prominence by becoming an innovator in a changing world. A newcomer relative to century-old competitors, the firm took advantage of globalisation to forge its path.

"We find solutions to unanticipated problems," says Greg Nitzkowski, managing partner. "We ask critical questions about the future and create corresponding products, strategies and goals."

Recognising Asia's growing prominence, Paul Hastings entered Asia in 1987.

Last year, the firm advised WH Group in the landmark Smithfield Foods deal, the largest Chinese takeover of a US company. The deal is one example of its focus on representing "Asia Inc" clients throughout their life cycles.

The firm has also advised Samsung on strategic outbound investments in Europe, Japan and the US.

"We took a long-term view of Asian companies that we would partner with, knowing that we could help them become global companies," Nitzkowski says.

Paul Hastings has also propelled mainland companies' globalisation by helping create a first-of-its kind offering, B-to-H-share listings on the Hong Kong stock exchange - increasing the accessibility companies have to international investors.

The firm has lawyers across Asia experienced in global transactions and finance who understand the issues, challenges and culture of Chinese business leaders.

"We provide the same high level of expertise, whether the partner is in Paris, San Francisco or Shanghai," Nitzkowski says. "As an innovator, we created highly integrated offices of partners who are connected to each other, who work on a continual basis, and who are aware of how to help clients from a global perspective."
