No matter what merits Mr Tsang Yok-Sing's column (South China Morning Post, May 21) have in criticising Governor Chris Patten's recent alleged remarks against the business community of Hong Kong, I fail to find any grounds in the same article to support Mr Tsang's claim that there is now a much better chance of the playing field becoming more level in Hong Kong after 1997.

Having voted for the establishment of the provisional legislature to replace the more democratically elected Legislative Council in the Preparatory Committee, Mr Tsang in fact supports a much more lopsided political playing field than Mr Patten would like to have when China starts to resume its sovereignty over Hong Kong.

Without fairness in politics, will a society really be able to ensure fairness in economic affairs in the long run? CHEUNG CHOR-YUNG Kowloon Tong
