A top official has left his job amid a nationwide scandal over his age.

Edmond Jayasinghe, head of the Information Ministry, allegedly lied about his age on official documents, including a Danish visa application.

Details of the civil servant's alleged deception emerged a few weeks ago when an anonymous caller leaked three documents, signed by Mr Jayasinghe, to The Sunday Leader.

'We found that on each of these documents one of our most trusted civil servants had not only lied about his age but been an inconsistent liar,' said editor Lasantha Wickramatunga.

According to the paper, Mr Jayasinghe had given the year of his birth as 1940, 1944 and 1946.

His family says 1940 is the real year, and he has just celebrated his 56th birthday.
