All the efforts that have gone into improving the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation are reflected in its commercial success, chairman and chief executive Kevin Hyde says.

The KCRC is the winner of the Hong Kong Management Association Quality Award for 1995.

Mr Hyde said higher levels of profit had been the result of the KCRC's 'quality-related improvements in efficiency, which, in turn, allow us to invest in further service improvements and reduce our fares in real terms'.

'The KCRC is one of the most commercially successful railways in the world. Not only do we operate without subsidies from government but we also pay a dividend to the Government, our only shareholder.' Mr Hyde said focusing on the railway's business side was one of the strategic initiatives aimed at achieving the KCRC's mission and vision.

The mission was 'to provide quality transport and related services in Hong Kong and with China in a safe, reliable, caring, cost-effective and environmentally responsible manner'.

The vision was 'to be recognised as a world leader in providing quality transport services on a commercial basis'.

Mr Hyde said as the number of quality initiatives increased, the KCRC began a more systematic approach to meet the 'requirements of our customers and the commercial requirements of our business'.
