A concern group yesterday pledged their support to Lo Tak-shing's bid to become the post-1997 chief executive if he could give them fame and fortune.
The group, known as the 'Concern Group on Lo Tak-shing becoming the Chief Executive', said they had been attracted by Mr Lo's pledges to raise the salaries of top civil servants to the level of those earned by the senior executives of big companies such as IBM, and other related remarks.
Group members, three from the Democratic Party, held that these remarks showed that Mr Lo might be able to help them get rich.
Though attracted by Mr Lo's generous offer, they questioned whether Mr Lo could meet all the necessary requirements to become the first chief executive and urged the Preparatory Committee to spell out the criteria for the top job.
They were only allowed to hand over a letter to a representative of the secretariat on the ground floor. They were not allowed to go to the office on the 15th floor.
Tse Wai-ming, the spokesman, said they were just members of the public and not representing the Democratic Party.
