I refer to Mr A.G. Foulkes' letter published in the South China Morning Post, on May 30. Whilst the definition of the word 'direct' in Webster's Dictionary is no doubt quoted accurately, it has long been airline practice to use the word 'non-stop' when any flight is precisely that and 'direct' when the same aircraft completes the route albeit with a stop en route. Most experienced, less experienced travellers and the travel trade have come to accept these brief although less than totally accurate descriptions. Any alternative, equally concise, word usage will be most welcomed by all airlines I feel sure, but it must convey a better service than heretofore. B. E. HUGHES Kowloon
