In a bid to stifle all dissent ahead of the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, police yesterday held Guangzhou-based dissident Wang Xizhe incommunicado.

Wang was taken away yesterday afternoon while he was having lunch with his wife, Su Jiang, at a restaurant in Nanhai county.

Ms Su said they were there visiting a relative.

'Several plain-clothes police came into the restaurant.

'They said: 'Can we go outside to have a few words with you?' And he didn't come back.' She said she and the family waited in the restaurant for about two hours for Wang to return before going to the police, who were unable to give her any more information.

Wang - who was sentenced to 14 years in jail in 1982 for spreading 'counter-revolutionary propaganda' and 'sedition' - was paroled after serving 11 years.
