I am writing with regard to Mr Hector Ross's letter which appeared in the Sunday Morning Post, on May 12 about the 'Royal' debate.

Perhaps if I had the misfortune to be detained during the Cultural Revolution I would feel the same way as he.

However, I have only been in Hong Kong since 1981 and all of my dealings with officials of the Chinese Government have been cordial - useful and productive to coin a phrase. The PRC officials I have entertained at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club have all enjoyed their visits.

I see no basis to conclude that the 'Royal' title will preclude future co-operation - in fact, advice from our own Government and from a prominent member of the Legislative Council (and the Preparatory Committee) would indicate just the opposite.

It is easy to succumb to fear and suspicion.
