A team of 25 young swimmers are off to Taiwan tomorrow to take part in a three-day international swimming competition. Most of the team members heading for the 1996 International Age Group Swimming Invitation competition, to be held in Kaohsiung City, are in the 11-12 year age group. The other swimmers will be taking part in the 13-14 and 15-17 years categories. The competition is a great opportunity for Hong Kong's promising younger swimmers to gain experience in competitive swimming at international level, said Alan Sham, age group committee chairman of the Hong Kong Amateur Swimming Association (HKASA). Mr Sham said he expected the team to perform well, and had high hopes of swimmer Tsui Lap-yin, winner of the High Point Award in the 1995 Age Group Championships. Other swimmers who stood a good chance of making it into the top three places in their age groups were Ng Wai-yin, Cheung Man-chun, Tsai Hiu-wai (holder of the Outstanding Female Swimmer Award at the 1996 Short Course Championships) and Asian Games silver medallist Katie Lau. The HKASA is sending the team to Taiwan with the support of the Hong Kong Sports Development Board and Adidas Hong Kong Ltd.
