CAMPAIGNERS looking to convert the former Aberdeen police station into a centre for teenagers have called on the public and businesses to help pay for the $10 million project.
The Government Property Agency (GPA) has agreed to allow the conversion of the 19th-century building into a youth club providing entertainment for young people in a drug and alcohol-free environment.
Organisers hope the club, to be called the Warehouse, will be opened this year following a government decision to pay for the repairs and renovation of the crumbling building.
Warehouse fund-raising officer Mrs Rosie Brough said: ''We believe the place will be more of an attraction to young people than the bars and clubs of Lan Kwai Fong.'' The organisers hope to provide a disco, pool room, general relaxation areas and a cafe selling soft drinks.
''The New Year tragedy at Lan Kwai Fong has focused everybody's mind on the place, but we have been working on the project for much of last year,'' Mrs Brough said.
She said members of the project committee were all concerned parents.
