Sporadic landslides have plagued the villagers of Yuanyang county, a relief worker said yesterday. Christy Fong Miu, a programme officer with World Vision International, spent the past six months in the county on a community development project. She said landslides occurred frequently in Yuanyang and made the lives of the poor inhabitants even more difficult. As Yuanyang is mountainous, more than 90 per cent of its population live on steep slopes and practise contour farming. Landslides can bury their crops and the farmers' sole source of income is gone, Ms Fong said. Soil erosion and heavy rains from June to October aggravate the drainage problems, she said.
