As summer gets underway, young people throughout the territory are gearing for a host of activities that will be both enjoyable for the participants and useful to the community.

Now in its 28th year, the Summer Youth Programme is being planned under one overall theme - 'Share the Fun, Serve the Community', while the territory's 18 districts will also hold activities under their own individual themes. About $40 million has been set aside for the 14,000 activities in this year's summer programme.

The wide-ranging activities will include volunteer social service, outdoor programmes, sports, arts and civic education events, fun fairs, and an international youth exchange.

District Co-organising Committee president Norman Lo Kam-wah said the activities aimed to encourage young people to feel more concern for the community.

Youngsters who make outstanding contributions as volunteers will receive scholarships to go overseas on study tours.

Mr Lo said with the approach of Hong Kong's handover, there was a trend to relate more activities to the 1997 theme.
