HUNDREDS of people took to the streets of Kowloon Bay last night in a noisy protest against controversial plans for an AIDS health centre.
Police, who looked on as an estimated 500 residents of the Richland Gardens development marched down Wang Kwong Road and Wang Chiu Road, said the demonstration was non-violent.
The group shouted for the Government to meet them and agree to move its proposed $250 million health centre - to include clinics for AIDS and sexually-transmitted diseases - 250 metres further from the estate.
'We need to talk to the Government immediately - they have to stop construction,' they shouted.
Resident Kwok Tse-hing, 46, said frustration had finally boiled over last night after days of inaction on the issue from officials.
'We are not saying they should not build a clinic, but they should accept our opinion and move away from us,' he said.
Last night's impromptu demonstration was designed to promote a major rally next Sunday, which is expected to attract about 90 per cent of the estate's 25,000 residents.
