HAPPY Birthday Hong Kong. And if the stars and heavens are to be believed, hold tight - you are in for a roller coaster ride over the next year. Astrologer Sravaniya has mapped a birthday star chart to sneak a glimpse of what the territory can expect in the next year. The signing of the 99-year lease by Britain and China on June 9, 1898, makes Hong Kong a Gemini, the only one of the 12 horoscope signs where two personalities - the twins - vie for control of the same space. And the stars predict 'a special destiny' over the next 12 months. But 'the major lesson involves learning to identify with an ideal bigger than itself'. The upcoming year is a time to 'stand for something, in spite of all its real or imagined personal difficulties', Sravaniya told the Sunday Morning Post. It was little surprise to learn Gemini-ruled Hong Kong is all about 'sex, power and money. It is expansive, jovial and extravagant. Doing things in a big way is common.' Being a Gemini 'makes Hong Kong a place where an abundance of information is always circulating and people under its influence tend to be more questioning, conceptualising, observant and objective, co-operating and interacting, but also impersonal and detached'. 'What we thought were conflicting sides can be seen as complementary, helping to support each other and instead of enemies they can unite into one whole view of life,' said Sravaniya. For cash-keen Hong Kong people, the period until November brings good news. Purchasing power, sales and financial negotiations are at the peak of their cycle. But the territory is advised not to 'over-extend since extravagances could squander its advantage'. But the chart of fortune swings as 1997 begins. Early 1997 until June is 'a potentially dangerous and tricky time subject to trauma, anxiety, deception or iniquity'. It is a time to step carefully since 'there will be pressure from other people's forceful desires'. This can lead to confusion and discontent. The solution is to consolidate and 'take a mature, responsible attitude of stability', the astrologer warns. As Hong Kong approaches the handover it is advised to 'work hard for long-range goals and you can achieve something of permanent and lasting value'.
