Co-operation between European cultural communities in Hong Kong is enabling two Portuguese art exhibitions to be staged later this year.

One of Portugal's most important contemporary engravers, David de Almeida, is presenting his works here for the first time in September - courtesy of Germany's Goethe-Institute. In November, artist Laura Cesana is exhibiting her paintings and etchings at the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre.

'These exhibitions are a result of an initiative by a European Union working group for culture which has been formed to share resources,' cultural attache Beatrix Brasil said.

'A small country like Portugal cannot afford venues and galleries of its own. But we can present Portuguese culture by sharing venues of other European nations.' Ms Brasil said de Almeida's display would be the 'top Portuguese contemporary art exhibition of the year'.

Some of his work was inspired by travels through China.

Cesana's works are partly sponsored by the Italian Consulate-General. The Italian artist now teaches art at Lisbon College of Education.
