Officials from Hong Kong's futures and stock exchanges, and the Central Clearing and Settlements System, are to ask Telecommunications Authority director-general Alex Arena on Friday for a discount on prices charged by Hongkong Telecom for data lines. The stock exchange is one of Telecom's largest customers for data lines connecting the exchange floor to dealing rooms. The demand for data capacity has rocketed since the installation of second dealing terminals fitted in broker's offices instead of on the trading floor. The exchange pays $1,000 a month for each data line and wants to be given discounts by Telecom but the supplier cannot offer a discount without permission from the Office of the Telecommunications Authority. Mr Arena confirmed he was to meet officials from the exchanges but said the letter he had received from them did not specify the subject to be discussed.
