Voters go to the polls today in the country's second general election in less than four months.
More than 80 political groups are taking part, including all the main parties, in a contest for 301 parliamentary seats.
Campaigning was brought to an end 24 hours before election day, with all political rallies and public speeches banned under a rigorous code of conduct to ensure free and fair polls.
International observers are monitoring the elections, and the authorities have deployed police and troops across the country to provide security at polling stations.
'We are doing the utmost to ensure these elections are free and fair,' said Mohammad Abu Hena, Bangladesh's chief election commissioner.
'Apart from the troops and international delegates, we have local observers present at the polling booths for the first time in our history,' he said.
