A young 'playboy' dance instructor who was showered with money and gifts by his 40-year-old lover, dumped her when she had cancer, a court heard yesterday.

Chan Ming-ming told the District Court she used a credit card to buy Scott Todd, 20, a 'tailor-made evening jacket and white shirt'.

Chan, who is accused of stabbing Mr Todd, broke down in tears as she described how she helped pay for his accommodation, bought him expensive clothes and lent him $36,000.

At the beginning of last November, she discovered she had cancer and was operated on. Mr Todd moved in with her while she was recuperating, but left suddenly on December 24.

'He told me he was going home to see his parents, but then people from the dance school phoned me and said he was still in Hong Kong,' Chan said.

'I called his parents and told them I was ill. I told them I was having chemotherapy. Scott called me to tell me to stop phoning his parents since it was a private matter.
