There is not a single true human emotion on display in The Assassin (Pearl, 9.30pm), a flimsy and weak thriller that has more in common with My Fair Lady than other films of its kind.

It may have an experienced and highly fashionable cast - Bridget Fonda, Gabriel Byrne, Dermot Mulroney, Harvey Keitel and Anne Bancroft - but no one lifts this Hollywood glamour-fest to being a serious screenplay.

Based on Nikita by Luc Besson, Fonda plays Maggie, a hardened young murderess who is to be executed for her crimes.

But a covert agency specialising in hi-tech assassination wants to transform Maggie from an unguided missile into a sleek killing machine.

Maggie has no choice: she can learn to kill on command or die.

But Fonda (Single White Female ) is as convincing as the hardened criminal as my dear granny would be.
