Democratic Party legislator Lau Chin-shek has deferred a controversial bill aiming to give lawmakers the power to vet bus fares.

Mr Lau had wanted the bill put to the vote on June 26, but the committee examining his private member's bill had said they needed more time.

Mr Lau said yesterday: 'I didn't know the bills committee would not be able to finish its work before June 26, because I had had no notice when it would have the next meeting.' Although he could put his bill to the vote before the committee has finished studying it, he said he did not want to set a bad precedent.

But what Mr Lau said yesterday contradicted what he told committee members.

The committee is awaiting a report by Legco's research unit, due next month, on how governments in other countries supervise their bus companies.

At last week's Legco House Committee meeting, chairman Zachary Wong Wai-yin, a Democrat, said Mr Lau had told members he would not wait for the report and would put his bill to the vote on June 26.
