Shark nets guard Sai Kung racers

Genevieve Ku

Fishermen have put home-made shark nets in the waters around Sai Kung harbour to protect dragon boat rowers.

The double-layered nets were put in place following reports of sharks in the area over the past few weeks.

More than 70 teams will be racing in the harbour this morning.

Mak Hin-kwan, president of the Sai Kung District Dragon Boat Racing Organising Committee, said sharks should not pose too much of a threat.

'We have Marine Police as well as the Government Flying Service looking out for us,' Mr Mak said.

'And we have the nets.' Sai Kung will host some of the best races. Teams from Italy, Holland and Southeast Asia are among the contestants.

Sha Tin's Shing Mun River is another site.

A total of114 teams and more than 2,000 competitors will be involved there.

The Governor, Chris Patten, will be at Castle Peak Bay typhoon shelter in Tuen Mun as the guest of honour.
